Om Banna: The Mystery of India’s Bullet Baba Temple

The Ghost Rider of Rajasthan: The Legend of Om Banna and the Bullet Baba Temple

Have you ever heard of a temple where the primary deity is a 350cc Royal Enfield Bullet? No, this isn’t a scene from a fantasy movie like Kilometers and Kilometers; it is a living reality in the heart of Rajasthan.

Located on the Jodhpur-Pali highway, the Om Banna Temple, popularly known as the Bullet Baba Temple, is perhaps one of the most mysterious roadside shrines in the world.

The Tragic Accident That Started a Legend

The story dates back to December 2, 1988. Om Singh Rathore (fondly known as Om Banna), the son of a local village leader, was riding his beloved Royal Enfield (Plate No. RNJ 7773) when he lost control and struck a tree. Sadly, he passed away on the spot.

The Bike That Refused to Stay at the Police Station

What happened next is what turned a tragedy into a divine mystery. The local police seized the motorcycle and took it to the station. However, the next morning, the bike was missing—only to be found back at the exact spot of the accident.

Thinking it was a prank, the police took it back, emptied the fuel tank, and locked it with chains. Yet, like clockwork, the bike appeared at the crash site the following morning. This “miracle” repeated until the authorities and family realized that the spirit of Om Banna resided within his machine.

Did You Know? Today, the bike is kept in a glass bulletproof case, and the tree that caused the accident is still standing, adorned with sacred threads.

Rituals and Offerings: Why Do People Offer Liquor?

Unlike traditional Indian temples where you offer sweets or flowers, the “Bullet Baba” is often offered small bottles of “Bullet” brand whisky. It is believed that Om Banna was fond of his drink, and offering it ensures his spirit stays happy and protects travelers.

Truck drivers and commuters passing through National Highway 62 (formerly NH-65) never pass the shrine without bowing or honking. It is a local belief that failing to pay respects will result in a disastrous journey.

Why You Should Visit

Whether you are a skeptic or a believer, the aura of the Bullet Baba Temple is undeniable. It represents the unique cultural fabric of Rajasthan Tourism, where faith and folklore blend seamlessly.

For bikers on a trip to Jodhpur or Udaipur, this is a mandatory pitstop—a tribute to a fellow rider who never truly left the road.
