Why These Tiny Birds Need Our Help Right Now
World Sparrow Day 2025: Save Sparrows, Save Our Environment
Today, March 20, 2025, marks the 17th World Sparrow Day. What started as a small initiative in India has now become a global movement celebrated in 50+ countries. But why do we still need to talk about sparrows in 2026?
House sparrows (Passer domesticus), once the most common birds around our homes, are disappearing from cities at an alarming rate. This day reminds us: Save Sparrows, Save Environment.
The History of World Sparrow Day

World Sparrow Day was launched on March 20, 2010, by the Nature Forever Society of India in collaboration with the Eco-Sys Action Foundation (France). The brainchild of conservationist Mohammed Dilawar, the day aims to raise awareness about the declining population of house sparrows and other common urban birds.
In 2026, we celebrate the 17th edition. From art competitions to nest-box installations, people worldwide are taking action. Last year’s major event was held at Veermata Jijabai Botanical Garden in Mumbai – expect even bigger celebrations this year!
Why Are House Sparrows Disappearing?

Modern urbanization is the biggest culprit:
- Concrete buildings replace old rooftops where sparrows nested.
- Mobile tower radiation and pollution affect their health.
- Pesticides kill the insects that baby sparrows eat.
- Less green space means fewer seeds and water sources.
Result? The house sparrow is now listed as “Near Threatened” in many urban areas. Their decline is an early warning for our own environment.
Why Sparrows Matter – More Than You Think
Sparrows are nature’s tiny pest controllers. They eat thousands of insects daily and help pollinate plants by spreading seeds. Without them, gardens and farms suffer. Protecting sparrows means protecting biodiversity and cleaner cities.
